Best Time to Visit Bangkok: Month by Month

Bangkok runs on three seasons — cool, hot and wet — and the "best" one depends on what you're optimising for: perfect weather, low prices, or clean air. Those three don't all peak in the same month, which is the part most guides gloss over. Here's the honest version.

The short answer

For weather, November to February wins: cool, dry and roughly 22–32°C. December and January are the loveliest but also the busiest and priciest. If you want that weather with thinner crowds, aim for November (just after the rains) or late February.

Cool & dry season (November–February)

This is peak Bangkok: comfortable days, pleasant evenings, blue skies, and the city's full calendar of events. It's the best time for walking, rooftop bars and day trips. The catches are crowds and prices — December and January are the year's high season — and, less obviously, air quality: PM2.5 tends to be at its worst in these still, dry months. It rarely spoils a trip, but if you're sensitive, keep an AQI app handy.

Hot season (March–May)

The heat builds fast, and April is brutal — often 35°C+ with high humidity. It's also when northern crop-burning can push haze south. The upside: it's quieter than the cool-season peak, and it's Songkran (13–15 April), the nationwide water-fight new year that turns the city into a giant, joyful soaking. If you can handle the heat, Songkran is a genuine bucket-list experience.

Rainy / green season (June–October)

The underrated season. The rain is usually a short, heavy afternoon downpour that clears quickly — not all-day grey — and in return you get the lowest prices, the fewest tourists, and the cleanest air of the year.

The wettest stretch is September and October. If your budget matters more than guaranteed sunshine, and especially if air quality is a concern, this is a smart and very cheap time to visit. Bangkok's malls, markets and temples are all weatherproof anyway.

Festivals worth planning around

Songkran (mid-April) — the water festival, the country's biggest party. Loy Krathong (November) — floating lantern offerings on the river and canals, beautiful and atmospheric. Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) — Yaowarat (Chinatown) goes all out. New Year's Eve — riverside fireworks around ICONSIAM and Asiatique.
