Best Time to Visit Phuket: Month by Month
Phuket sits on the Andaman coast, so its seasons are driven by the southwest monsoon — and unlike inland Thailand, the sea matters as much as the sky. Get the timing right and you get calm turquoise water and blue skies; get it wrong and you get rough surf and red flags. Here's the honest month-by-month.
The short answer
The best time to visit is the dry season, November to April: clear skies, calm seas, perfect beach days. December to March is the most reliable for sunshine and January–February the driest, with daytime highs around 33°C. That's also peak season, so expect higher prices and busier beaches.
Dry / high season (November–April)
This is Phuket at its postcard best — flat, clear water for swimming and snorkelling, island-hopping to Phi Phi and the Similans, and warm, dry evenings. The trade-off is crowds and peak pricing, especially over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year. Book ahead.
Hot season (March–May)
The tail of the dry season heats up, with March–May the hottest of the year (often 35°C+ and humid). Seas are still mostly calm early on. It's a touch quieter than the December–February peak, and prices ease.
Wet / green season (May–October)
It doesn't rain all day — you'll often get sunny mornings and a heavy afternoon downpour — and you're rewarded with the lowest prices and emptiest beaches of the year. The catch is the sea.
September brings the heaviest rain and the roughest water, sometimes into early October. The Andaman develops strong rip currents in these months, and drownings happen every year, so always obey the red flags and swim only where lifeguards mark it safe. June to August is the sweet spot of the low season: real savings, plenty of sun between showers, and seas that are usually still swimmable with care.
Festivals worth planning around
Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Gie Chai, Sep/Oct) — a dramatic nine-day Taoist festival with processions and famous feats of endurance, unique to the island. Songkran (mid-April) — the nationwide water-fight new year. Loy Krathong (November) — floating lanterns on the water. Low-season events and the King's Cup Regatta (early December) round out the calendar.
