Cost of Living on Koh Samui 2026: A Monthly Budget

Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

Koh Samui surprises people on cost. Short-stay holiday prices make it feel expensive, but long-term rent is some of the best value of any Thai island, and a quiet local life here is genuinely cheap. The catches are island logistics and the cost of getting on and off. Here's the 2026 reality.

The short answer

LifestylePer month (฿)≈ USDWhat it buys
Lean฿30,000–40,000$920–1,225Long-term studio/1-bed in Maenam or Lamai, local food, own scooter
Comfortable฿45,000–60,000$1,375–1,840Nice 1–2 bed near a beach, mixed dining, scooter, real insurance
Luxury฿80,000+$2,450+Pool villa with a view, Western dining, a car, top cover

Couples living comfortably together typically land around ฿65,000–85,000 thanks to shared rent.

Rent by area

Area1-bed (long-term) / monthCharacter
Maenam฿8,000–15,000Quietest, cheapest, long beach, families & long-stayers
Lamai฿10,000–20,000Relaxed, good value, second-biggest town
Chaweng฿12,000–25,000Main hub — beach, shopping, nightlife, pricier
Bophut / Fisherman's Village฿15,000–30,000Chic, boutique dining, north-coast cool
Pool villas (island-wide)฿25,000–70,000+2–3 beds, gardens, sea views

Long leases beat monthly rates, and deals improve in the quieter months. One to two months' deposit plus the first month is standard.

The island-life costs

Getting around means your own scooter (฿2,500–3,500/month to rent) — there's no real public transport and the shared songthaews are pricey for daily use. Food runs ฿8,000–15,000 a month eating mostly local; Western dining in the tourist spots costs more. Groceries and imported goods carry a small island premium over the mainland. Utilities are about ฿2,500–3,500 a month with air-con, and don't forget the recurring cost of flights or the ferry when you leave the island.

Koh Samui vs the rest of Thailand

On long-term rent, Samui undercuts Phuket and matches or beats Pattaya. Where it costs more is logistics — imported goods and travel on and off the island. Live local and it's one of the better-value places to settle.
